Katie Nelson, 17, Skelmersdale
|
Working with children has been a lifelong ambition for Katie, and e2e has turned this dream into a reality. Katie left school with GCSEs in English and Science, but achieving a maths qualification proved elusive. In order to embark on an Apprenticeship in Childcare, Katie needed a helping hand to get to grip with numbers! A key part of e2e is the opportunity to improve young people’s ‘Skills for Life’ which includes basic numeracy and literacy. Katie found that the extra support she gained through Training West Lancashire (TWL) helped her get over her maths barriers, as well as adding Health & Safety and First Aid qualifications to her achievements. Katie is now working towards NVQ Level 2 in Childcare, and has secured a full-time position as Nursery Assistant at First 4 Kids in Skelmersdale where she is getting the chance to put her skills into practice. “I have always dreamt of working with children, but had some hurdles to overcome to help me get where I wanted to be. e2e gave me practical advice and one-to-one support to learn new skills and get the qualifications I needed to move on. When I first started on e2e I was really shy, but being with young people in similar situations as me has really boosted my confidence. I am now looking forward to completing my Apprenticeship and hope to move into a supervisor role in the nursery one day.”

Supporting employer quote: Sharon Murphy, Nursery Manager at First 4 Kids said, “When Katie first joined us she was a very shy young lady who lacked confidence. Working closely with TWL, we have given her lots of support and seen Katie flourish in her role as Nursery Assistant. “Our business thrives on having a good balance of highly experienced mature staff and young people with fresh ideas, so being able to recruit from a pool of motivated young people like Katie is a major benefit to us. The e2e programme allows employers to link into the industry knowledge of learning providers like TWL, who offer ongoing support and advice to both the learners and employers they work with. e2e gives young people an excellent chance to get a taste of their chosen career through work placements, and gives employers the opportunity to see potential employees at first-hand.”
